Household planning

Moving with pets: plan the journey and the first night

Build your pet’s move around safe transport, confirmed entry requirements, and a quiet arrival. Give one person ownership of the animal’s care while everyone else handles the boxes.

Start with the animal’s route, not the truck’s route

Write a separate itinerary for each pet: who travels with them, the vehicle or carrier, overnight stops, and where they will stay during loading. Include the gap between your arrival and furniture delivery. A pet’s food, care supplies, and sleeping place need to arrive with the pet, even if household delivery slips.

Decide whether a trusted caregiver can handle loading-day care. Confirm pickup, drop-off, feeding instructions, and the handoff contact. If no caregiver is available, choose a quiet secure room and schedule its contents to be packed before the animal uses it. Put a clear “Pet inside: keep door closed” sign on the door and tell the crew directly.

Check destination rules before arranging appointments

USDA APHIS explains that receiving states and territories set requirements for pets arriving with their owners. Use its state-to-state directory to reach the destination’s animal-health authority. Ask about your species, origin, route, and travel date. Do not assume every domestic move needs the same certificate, testing, or appointment timing.

Make a short requirements record with the official source, the date checked, any document or treatment required, its valid travel window, and who will arrange it. Share that record with your veterinarian. Separately confirm airline, lodging, and new-building requirements; one organization’s approval does not settle another’s rules. For birds, reptiles, or other less common pets, ask for species-specific advice rather than applying dog or cat guidance.

  • Confirm destination animal-entry rules
  • Ask the veterinarian which preparations apply to this animal
  • Get carrier or airline acceptance in writing where possible
  • Check lodging pet limits, fees, and unattended-pet rules

Make the veterinary conversation practical

Tell the veterinarian the travel duration, transport method, past motion sickness or anxiety, and any existing conditions. Ask whether the animal is fit for the trip, how to maintain prescribed care, what signs require urgent help, and how to obtain records or refills. Medication decisions belong with the veterinarian; do not improvise sedatives or change doses for moving day.

Cornell’s veterinary travel guidance recommends gradually introducing dogs to their travel restraint and short rides. UC Davis similarly recommends helping cats become familiar with their carrier. Start early enough to notice difficulties and ask for help. For car travel, use an appropriate secured carrier or restraint and never leave a pet unattended in the vehicle. Save veterinary and emergency-clinic contacts where you can find them offline.

Pack a kit that stays under your control

Use a bag you already own for the animal’s familiar food, water, bowls, prescribed medicines, waste supplies, bedding, and relevant records. Keep enough accessible for the planned journey plus a realistic delivery delay. Check medicine storage with the veterinarian. Label the carrier with a working contact number, and review identification and microchip contact details before departure.

Put the kit beside your own travel bags, away from shipment boxes. Give the care owner a final departure check: animal accounted for, carrier closed, kit loaded, destination access confirmed. If two adults are swapping responsibility, say so explicitly. A written itinerary is particularly helpful when one person leaves early while the other stays for the mover’s inventory.

Treat door openings as planned handoffs

Before loaders arrive, move the animal into the agreed secure space or transfer them to the caregiver. Check that the room has appropriate ventilation and no packed-away care essentials. Tell every helper which door stays closed. The person supervising the pet should avoid simultaneously directing a truck or carrying heavy furniture.

For an overnight stop, decide how luggage and the animal enter before opening the vehicle. For a cat, keep the carrier closed until you are inside a secure room with exterior doors and windows shut. Cornell and UC Davis both emphasize secure travel arrangements. Do not rely on an unfamiliar doorway, temporary gate, or another person noticing a loose animal. Keep the travel plan flexible enough for care stops and delays.

Open one safe room before the whole home

Walk through the arrival area before bringing the animal inside. Look for open exterior doors, loose packing materials, accessible cleaners, and gaps behind appliances. Set up the familiar bed, water, and species-appropriate care items in one quiet area. Keep that space separate from active unloading and give the crew a simple instruction about its door.

For example, if furniture will arrive tomorrow, make tonight’s pet room with what traveled in your car rather than waiting for an “open first” box. Keep ordinary care routines as consistent as practical. Arrange a local veterinary contact and ask the relevant local office about licensing or registration that may apply. If the animal seems unwell or distress is not settling, contact a veterinarian rather than treating it as an inevitable part of moving.
