Moving a washer and dryer: preparation, transport and reinstallation

Plan a washer-and-dryer move as three separate jobs: preparing the appliances, transporting them, and making them ready to use again. Identify each model, confirm the destination setup, and assign the work before moving day. Keep a temporary laundry option available until installation is complete.

1. Check the destination before booking

Confirm that the appliances belong to you and are included in your move. Record the full model numbers and find the corresponding installation and moving instructions. Note whether the machines are separate, stacked, a unitized pair or an all-in-one appliance; those configurations do not share one handling method.

Check the destination requirements with the installer or other appropriate professional before reserving transport. A machine can fit inside the room while still having unsuitable connections, insufficient service clearance or no workable route into the space. Resolve uncertain compatibility before the appliances arrive.

Document the route for the people doing the work; measurements help identify questions before arrival. Measure doors, turns and access points →

  • Space, operating clearances and a carrying route through doors, turns and stairs.
  • The washer's required water supply and drain arrangement.
  • The specified electrical supply and compatible outlet for each appliance.
  • Whether the dryer needs gas, an exhaust vent, a drain or another model-specific arrangement.
  • Approved stacking or pedestal components and the installation instructions for that configuration.

2. Resolve washer transport restraints by model

Link to this section

Locate the instructions for securing your washer during transport and removing the restraints during installation. Check which parts are already available, which need ordering, and who will fit them. Do this early enough to resolve missing hardware before loading day.

Manufacturer examples show why a universal shipping-bolt rule is unreliable. GE's front-load guidance describes reinstalling shipping bolts, spacers and clamps. Whirlpool's compact front-load guidance calls for new transport bolts, says not to reuse old bolts, and directs owners to a certified technician. GE's top-load and unitized guidance describes different arrangements across model generations.

Use those examples as a reason to check your own model. If instructions or required parts are missing, contact the manufacturer or an appropriate technician before loading. Ask whether any proposed substitute is approved for the exact machine; do not assume ordinary packing material will protect its internal parts.

Record two separate responsibilities: fitting the required restraints before transport, and removing them at the prescribed installation stage before use. Keep the instructions and service record accessible at both ends of the move.

3. Name the person responsible for each job

Ask the mover to confirm the service scope in writing. Preparation, disconnection, separating a stack, transport, installation and testing are separate jobs. Mark each one as included, separately priced or unresolved, and name the provider responsible. A loading reservation alone does not establish who will make an appliance ready to move or use.

Arrange qualified help for gas work. Whirlpool's appliance-moving guidance calls for a professional appliance technician to disconnect and reconnect a gas dryer's gas line. Questions about an outlet, circuit, hardwired connection or cord change belong with an appropriate electrician or qualified installer, outside an ordinary packing-and-loading handoff.

Schedule preparation before loading, confirm destination access before delivery, and arrange installation when the appliances will be available. Give each provider the relevant model and site information. Confirm what happens if a part, service appointment or delivery date changes.

4. Finish laundry and keep accessories traceable

Plan the last laundry loads around the preparation appointment. Follow the exact model's cleaning, draining, drying and disconnection instructions. If the appliances will face freezing conditions or storage, ask about the applicable preparation; ordinary draining is not necessarily enough for those circumstances.

Photograph the condition before preparation and keep the provider's record of completed work. Label removed parts and accessories with the machine they belong to and record where they will travel. Include hoses and any approved stacking or pedestal components that the installer says should accompany the appliances.

Ask the installer which items may be reused and which require replacement. Keep the manuals, model numbers, service contacts and installation appointment details where you can reach them without opening the moving load. Set aside enough clean clothing and bedding to cover the gap until installation is complete.

Pack a separate supply for the travel and installation gap while the rest of the laundry is boxed. Plan accessible clothes and bedding →

5. Make a clear loading handoff

Give the crew the access plan, model-specific handling instructions and preparation record. Use a provider with the equipment and experience for the actual route, including stairs or tight turns. Measurements help the crew plan; they do not establish that a particular lifting method is safe.

Confirm the prescribed transport orientation. GE advises against transporting its dryers on their side or back, and says its Spacemaker unitized washer/dryers must travel upright. Check the instructions for your own appliances and for any approved stacked or pedestal configuration before deciding how they will travel.

Before loading, resolve any uncertainty about restraints, preparation, the carrying route or handling instructions with the responsible provider. Confirm who will receive the appliances and how that person will identify the accessories and preparation record. Keep the receiver informed if delivery or installation arrangements change.

6. Complete installation before the first load

At arrival, compare the visible condition with your earlier photographs and record any concern. Follow the model's installation sequence for placement, leveling, connections, restraint removal and testing. Keep the appliances out of use until the required installation work is complete.

The U.S. Fire Administration recommends professional dryer installation and service. For a vented dryer, the vent must not be damaged, crushed or restricted; confirm the completed arrangement with the installer. Ventless models have different requirements, so use their own installation instructions rather than assuming the vented-dryer setup applies.

Use the specified compatible electrical connection. The U.S. Fire Administration says major appliances should connect directly to a wall outlet without an extension cord and warns against forcing a three-prong plug into a two-slot outlet. Resolve an unsuitable outlet with a qualified professional instead of improvising a connection.

Save the installation record and the result of the manufacturer-prescribed test. If you notice a leak, severe vibration, a damaged connection or another unresolved installation concern, stop using the appliance and contact the appropriate professional before continuing.

7. Keep one coordination checklist for each machine

Link to this section

Use the checklist below as a handoff record, adding an owner and next action for anything still unresolved. Keep preparation and installation responsibilities separate even when one company provides both services.

For example, a household needs replacement transport hardware and its mover does not prepare appliances. The household confirms parts availability and books a technician before pickup, then arranges installation for the day after delivery and sets aside clothing for the gap. This is a hypothetical coordination example, not a service-time estimate. If the parts or appointment slip, the household contacts the mover before loading to agree a revised plan.

Add the confirmed appointment dates to your own arrangements. Use the moving checklist alongside that record to coordinate access, travel and the remaining household preparation.
