Today: establish the constraints
Confirm when you must leave and when you can enter the new home. Write down the gap, if any. Confirm your budget and whether you will use a mover, a container, or a rented vehicle. For a rental home, read the actual notice and move-out terms; a two-week moving schedule does not override your lease.
Build a short inventory of large items first. Measure awkward furniture and the doorways it must pass through. Decide what you will move, donate, sell, or dispose of, and check collection availability before assuming you can remove everything on the last day.
Days 2–4: book the tasks that depend on other people
Arrange transport and loading help, building access, elevators, parking, utilities, and internet installation. Confirm bookings in writing. If using an interstate mover, review the official FMCSA selection guidance before paying.
Give every helper a specific responsibility and time. A plan that says 'pack' is difficult to act on; 'pack the hall cupboard by Thursday evening' has a clear finish. Keep a separate list for jobs waiting on a response so that they do not disappear into the packing list.
Days 5–10: pack in order of need
Pack seldom-used belongings first, then duplicate kitchenware and seasonal items. Label each box with its destination room, a box number, and a short description. Put the box numbers and contents in one simple inventory. Avoid placing sensitive personal information on labels visible outside the home.
Create a carry-with-you kit for documents, keys, medicines, chargers, basic toiletries, a change of clothes, and essential pet or child supplies. Keep it physically separate from the shipment. Schedule short daily checks of your unconfirmed bookings.
Final days: stop creating new work
Reconfirm access and timing, finish ordinary packing, and prepare walkthrough photos. Keep the moving documents available. On arrival, establish a place to sleep, wash, and prepare basic food before tackling decorative or occasional-use items.
In the planner, choose your actual move date. Earlier suggested dates become tasks to address now, not reasons to invent a later move date. Check government and destination requirements separately; some begin with residency or other events rather than delivery day.
